New York Stations Break In With Times Square Crash

By Chris Ariens

New York’s local stations are in rolling coverage following a deadly crash in Times Square.

Around Noon today, a car careened through the the intersection of 47th St. after driving the wrong way up 7th Avenue in the heart of the so-called Crossroads of the World. At least one person was killed and more than 20 injured before the car was upended on some safety bollards. The 26-year-old driver was taking into custody. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has ruled out terrorism. The New York Post reports the driver had prior arrests for DWI.

WABC and WCBS were both in their Noon newscasts when the story broke. WNBC, WNYW and WPIX quickly broke in with coverage. The stations are using a combination of ground crews, choppers and many building-mounted cameras in the congested, pedestrian area. Times Square has been made more pedestrian friendly in recent years with the closing of Broadway to all vehicles.
