New WCPO News Director: ‘We’re Going to #1’

Lane Michaelsen, the recently appointed news director of WCPO, has a clear goal for the Cincinnati ABC-affiliate: first place.

“We’re going to No. 1,” Michaelsen said in a recent interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer. “That’s our goal.”

WCPO, perennially in second place behind CBS-affiliate WKRC, has overhauled its staff in recent months. In addition to a new news director, WCPO has a new general manager in Steve Thaxton, who was hired in March.

When longtime news director Bob Morford departed WCPO earlier this year, he said that change would be good for the station. And there appears to be plenty of change on the horizon.

“This is really an exciting time for this TV station,” Thaxton told the Enquirer, adding that Scripps, the station’s owner, “wants to try new things economically, creatively, technologically. This is a great time for us to innovate and change things up.”
