ND Walks Away From Orlando’s WOFL; Station Searches for Replacement

According to reports from The Orlando Sentinel, local Fox O&O WOFL has fired its news director, Gavin Maliska.

Maliska took the position only recently, in December 2008. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, he started in print journalism before switching to TV. Maliska worked as assistant news director at WJBK Detroit, and then news director at WXIN Indianapolis, before joining WFOL.

Few details are available at present, but local TV critic Hal Boedeker speculates that he “wasn’t getting the job done,” as demonstrated by the station’s fourth-place status in news slots where it competes with other area stations, WFTV, WESH and WKMG.

The station offered a brief statement on the decision. “News director Gavin Maliska is no longer with the station,” a WOFL spokeswoman said. “An extensive search is under way for his replacement.” Assistant news director Jeff Zeller will be in charge in the interim. More…
