Murder Suspect Calls KOVR During Police Standoff

A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, William Gardner III, made a phone call to Sacramento CBS O&O KOVR during a police standoff in Las Vegas. The station played clips from the Gardner’s conversation with reporter Derek Shore on Monday’s evening newscast (video above).

The conversation, which Shore described as “very tense between both of us,” lasted for about an hour. A police negotiator was on the line for a “significant portion” of the call, according to KOVR. Gardener allowed Shore to speak to two people in the apartment with him, neither of whom said they were being held against their will.

The standoff ended when Gardner surrendered at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday morning.
