Rand Paul‘s public image took another hit on Sunday as NBC’s “Meet the Press” aired a lengthy examination of the Senate hopeful’s personal ideology as well as his recent string of media gaffes.

For Paul, it was yet another PR lesson in a week filled with them. Last week Paul was set to be a guest on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” but cancelled his appearance on Friday (as The Huffington Post noted, Paul became only the third person to do so in 62 years). Alluding to the critical “MtP” segment, Brian Stelter, media critic for The New York Times, tweeted “This is what happens when you cancel on ‘Meet the Press.'”

Calling Paul a “political novice” who “found the spotlight a little too hot” last week, David Gregory ticked off the tea party champion’s controversial comments, including his appearance on “The Rachel Maddow Show” in which Maddow pressed him on civil rights and his comments on “Good Morning America” about President Obama being too critical of BP.

On Sunday, Gregory’s message to Paul was all too clear: speak for yourself or we will speak for you.
