Longtime KTRK Sports Director Announces Plan to Leave Station: ‘I Am Not Retiring’

Longtime KTRK sports director Bob Allen is leaving the station at the end of the year.  Allen, who has been with KTRK since 1974, announced his plan to retire during the ABC O&O’s 10 p.m. newscast on Tuesday.

“It’s with mixed emotions that I’m letting you know that I’ll be leaving Channel 13 at the end of this year,” Allen told viewers.  “It’s something I’ve thought about for a while and those close to me know that I’ve been kicking it around for a few years. I am not — repeat — am not retiring; it’s just that after 38 and a half years of sharing Houston’s sports news with all of you at this station, and over 40 years of covering Houston sports, I want to do some other things while I can.”

Allen joined KTRK as weekend sports director in ’74 and was bumped up to sports director just six months later.

After leaving KTRK at the end of the year, Allen plans to write a book and possibly work with the radio and TV department at his alma mater, Stephen F. Austin University.

“I still want do to television,” Allen said, “but maybe just a different form from what I’ve done here.”
