Longtime Houston Meteorologist Goes to Outer Space

By Andrew Gauthier

Meteorologist Matt Lavine, who spent 17 years at Houston Fox O&O KRIV, has started a second career as an intergalactic space ranger.

Lavine is starring in a feature length sci-fi movie titled “Matt Mercury and His Rocket Rangers,” which is currently filming in Houston.

“I had to choose between the roof and outer space,” Lavine told KRIV recently. “And after 17 years on the roof, outer space won.”

Excluding the curly blond wig and spandex, Lavine’s role as Matt Mercury isn’t too far off from his job as a TV weathercaster, since the majority of the film is being shot in front of a green screen.

“This is not a stretch,” Lavine said, referring to the chroma-key wall. “This is about as close to TV as you can get, as far as being a TV weatherman.  I’m right at home.”

Here’s KRIV’s recent coverage of Lavine’s movie…

And here’s the original concept test for “Matt Mercury and His Rocket Rangers”…
