Locked in Retrans Stalemate with Time Warner Cable, Sinclair Extends Fox Affiliations

By Andrew Gauthier

Sinclair Broadcasting has reached a deal with Fox that will extend the station group’s Fox affiliations through the end of 2012.

Sinclair owns, operates, or provides services for 58 stations nationwide, including 20 Fox affiliates.  The company owns and operates most of its Fox affiliates including WZTV in Nashville, WPGH in Pittsburgh, WBFF in Baltimore, and KABB in San Antonio.

Perhaps more significant than affiliation extension, though, is that Sinclair has also entered into an overall programming licensing agreement with Fox.  The licensing deal will allow Sinclair to strike new retransmission agreements with cable companies through the end of 2012.

Sinclair’s current affiliation agreement with Fox was set to expire on March 31, 2012.  The company is currently locked in a stalemate with Time Warner Cable over retrans fees.
