Liz Crenshaw to Retire After 34 Years at WRC

By Merrill Knox

liz crenshaw wrcAfter 34 years at WRC in Washington, D.C., Liz Crenshaw is retiring from the NBC owned station.

“This is a note I had hoped never to have to write, but Liz Crenshaw has informed me she plans to retire at the end of May,” WRC vice president of news Mike Goldrick wrote in a note to WRC staff this morning. “Our viewers know Liz as a fierce advocate who saves them time and money — not to mention lives as in the case with some of her investigations over the years. We know Liz as a generous colleague, a reliable co-worker, and a good friend.”

Crenshaw began at WRC as an assignment editor. She eventually became a producer in the consumer unit, and when Lea Thompson left WRC for “Dateline” in 1993, Crenshaw became part of the on-air team.

In Goldrick’s note, Crenshaw said she looks forward “with great excitement to what lies ahead — more time with my family — and new adventures.”

Goldrick’s note is after the jump.

This is a note I had hoped never to have to write, but Liz Crenshaw has informed me she plans to retire at the end of May.

Our viewers know Liz as a fierce advocate who saves them time and money — not to mention lives as in the case with some of her investigations over the years. We know Liz as a generous colleague, a reliable co-worker, and a good friend. There probably isn’t anyone here who hasn’t stopped by her desk to ask for advice on everything from buying tires to protecting you from identity theft. She always knows the answer, and she always provides it with her brand of humor and warmth.

Liz has been with NBC4 since 1980. After spending several years as an assignment editor, she became a star producer in Lea Thompson’s Consumer Unit. When Lea left for Dateline in 1993, Liz stepped into that role and has been part of our on-air team ever since. I suspect our viewers will miss her dearly, and I know we all will.

I asked Liz to sum up her feelings about making this difficult decision. Here’s what she wrote:

“It’s been a great privilege and a pleasure to be a part of the NBC4 family for more than 30 years. My commitment to consumer reporting and looking out for the people of DC, Maryland and Virginia has been – not just a job – but a passion. Now it’s time for new explorations and time away from the camera. Of course leaving my NBC4 colleagues is sad. I have worked with some very special people. But, for me now I look forward with great excitement to what lies ahead – more time with my family – and new adventures.”

My commitment and our station’s commitment to continuing Liz’s legacy with strong consumer reporting will certainly continue. Meanwhile, we’ll start planning how to celebrate Liz both on and off air in the coming months.
