A car with two men inside pulled up to the news van. One of the men pulled out a gun and demanded their equipment. After handing it over, the crew walked back to the van. One suspect exchanged gun shots with the security guard, who was shot in the upper leg.

“Thank you, friends, for your well wishes. Our guard was shot today in Oakland while we were on assignment covering the Oakland teachers strike,” Vazquez said on Twitter.

“John abandoned the camera, took cover inside the news van where I was and told me to get down. We heard a flurry of loud gunshots. Very close! More shots, I saw a guy drag the camera away and saw our guard Matt was hit. Quickly called 9-1-1,” he continued to say in a thread along with a clip of giving a rundown of what happened to viewers on camera.

Police eventually tracked down the suspects in a champagne-colored Lexus and arrested them.

The security guard is expected to recover. He’s listed in stable condition.
