“We begin tonight with a story involving us,” anchor Eric Johnson said at the top of KOMO‘s 11 p.m. newscast on Monday (video above), announcing that the ABC-affiliate is suing the Seattle Police Department for breaking Washington’s public records law.
KOMO is seeking access to the department’s database of dashcam videos following an incident that was caught on a cellphone camera in which Seattle police officers aggressively restrained an accused jaywalker.
The jaywalking episode is just the latest instance of questionable police behavior caught on tape and KOMO wants to see if the department’s dashcam videos reveal additional acts of misconduct.
According to the station, KOMO’s investigative team has tried to gain access to the video database for more than a year and the department has “intentionally and illegally stonewalled” their efforts.
