KNBC, KCBS Remember Anchor Jess Marlow

By Mark Joyella

For a generation, Jess Marlow simply was local news in Los Angeles. He anchored newscasts at KNBC and KCBS, and for a time, his co-anchor at 5 p.m. was Tom Snyder, and at 11 p.m., it was Tom Brokaw.

On KNBC’s 5 p.m. newscast Monday (watch it above), Conan Nolan remembered the legendary anchorman as someone who “practiced his craft at the highest level.” In a tribute given in 1997 when Marlow received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Brokaw called Marlow “one of the most respected journalists in Southern California–a man whose reputation for fairness and integrity was without challenge.”

KNBC anchor Chuck Henry said of Marlow, “he was such a happy man.” Weather anchor Fritz Coleman described Marlow as a “lovely man…(who) never lost his humanity” despite years of reporting on some of the most awful stories in Los Angeles and around the world. “He was a titan.”

Here’s KCBS’ story, as aired on sister station KCAL:
