Wheeler, who had been an anchor at WKYC for 19 years, announced the move on her facebook page.

“After working at Channel 3 since 1995, my last day will be October 15!” wrote Wheeler. “I am grateful to have achieved the career I dreamed of as a little girl in Smithville, and to have worked in the city that I love so much. But as my wise teenager said– ‘Mom, you reached your dream right? Maybe it’s time for a new dream.’ He is right.”

Wheeler said she was going to work at a local high school with a focus on human rights and social justice.

“We’re obviously sad to see her go, but she has a great new opportunity and it’s a very hands-on opportunity for her to work with Cleveland students and make a difference in their lives,” Micki Byrnes, WKYC VP and station manager, told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Wheeler added, “After nearly 30 years in this business– my life won’t revolve around breaking news, I will have more time to savor life’s moments and advocate for our city’s children.”

Wheeler started at WKYC in 1995. She had previously worked at WDBJ in Roanoke, Va.
