KENS ‘Hugely Apologizes’ for Switching Away from Cowboys Game, Promises Investigation

By Andrew Gauthier

San Antonio CBS-affiliate KENS was forced into damage control mode on Sunday after its feed of a lopsided Cowboys game was switched to a more competitive contest.

“We know we had some angry viewers today,” KENS sports anchor Vinnie Vinzetta said at the top of his segment during the station’s 10 p.m. newscast on Sunday.  “The Dallas Cowboy game went away before the fourth quarter with Dallas leading 34 to 7.  That was a decision made by the CBS Network, that was not a KENS5 decision.  We hugely apologize for the situation nonetheless.”

The station was reportedly bombarded with nearly 200 hundred phone calls from viewers angry about the switch.

Vinzetta assured viewers on Sunday that station management is investigating the incident to ensure that such a thing doesn’t happen again.

KENS typically carries Houston Texans games on Sunday since CBS has rights to AFC games.  According to MySanAntonio.com, though, the station decided to take advantage of the opportunity to show the NFC‘s Cowboys as they played an AFC opponent.  (The Texans and the Cowboys played at the same time on Sunday).

It appears that KENS received a flex feed of the game from CBS, allowing the network to switch to more competitive games, instead of the constant feed it typically gets for Texans games.
