Kai The ‘Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker Hero’ Now Wanted for Murder

By Kevin Eck

Authorities in Union County, NJ, have issued an arrest warrant for Caleb Lawrence McGillvary. If that name doesn’t register, it may be because TVSpy readers better know the 34-year-old McGillvary as Kai ‘the hatchet wielding hitchhiker.’

McGillvary gained national attention after an interview he gave to Fresno FOX affiliate KMPH about saving a woman’s life went viral. You can watch the interview after the jump.

The victim, Joseph Galfy of Clark, NJ, was discovered after police were asked to check on his well being. An autopsy found Galfy died of blunt force trauma.

McGillvary, who also goes by the name of Kai Lawrence, Caleb Kai Lawrence and Kai Nicodemus, was last seen at a light rail station in Haddonfield, NJ. Police say McGillvary recently cut his hair in an attempt to change his appearance.

The Union County Homicide Task Force is working with state, local and federal authorities to locate McGillvary, who is homeless but considers himself ‘home free,’ relying on the kindness of strangers for food and housing.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about McGillvary’s whereabouts contact Union County Crime Stoppers at (908) 654-TIPS or at www.uctip.org. A $5,000 reward is being offered.

>UPDATE: More information has been provided explaining how police linked McGillvary to the murder. This is from the WABC website. “Investigators said Kai met the attorney near Times Square, and a surveillance camera captured images of them. The men later went back to the victim’s house, officials said. A post was made to his Facebook page on Tuesday in which Kai claims he was raped by the man.”
