KABC Upgrades News Chopper

Los Angeles ABC-owned station KABC has upgraded its helicopter with a new zoom lens and improved moving map technology.

Air7HD is now equipped with the Shotover F1 Live with 650mm zoom, which KABC says is the longest in ENG history. KABC has also upgraded it SkyMap7 moving map technology which the station says “will enable in-air reporters to quickly identify ground locations and addresses during fast moving assignments via location-specific video overlays.”

“By utilizing the SHOTOVER F1 LIVE as the centerpiece of the Air 7 HD news helicopter, we are providing unparalleled viewpoints into breaking news events,” said Rob Elmore, KABC vp and news director.

The press release says SHOTOVER F1 LIVE features a 6-axis gyro-stabilization with look down capability and an open platform design that can accommodate new cameras and lenses as they become available. The station says the system supports all major broadcast cameras, including both 4K and 2K models and comes equipped with the SHOTOVER Rain Spinner for keeping the lens clear when shooting in wet conditions.
