Justin Bieber’s Egging Exploits Big News for LA Stations

By Kevin Eck

kabc_bieberWhen the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant at Justin Bieber’s home in the investigation of the alleged felony egging of his neighbor’s house, all the LA stations picked up the story. But one station went above and beyond the call.

ABC owned station KABC spent nearly nine minutes of its hour long 11:00 a.m. news on the Biebs. The station took the Sheriff’s presser about the search live at the bottom of the hour.

KABC news director Cheryl Fair defended her station’s coverage telling TVSpy Bieber is a major celebrity and covering live pressers of developing stories is common for the station.

“We are actually the only LA station doing live local news between 11:30a and noon,” said Fair. “Had other stations been in local news at that time it’s likely others would have also carried the news conference. Had the news conference taken place before our newscast, it would then have resulted only in sound bites from the news conference being used within our report as was the case on our later newscasts.”

The highlight of the presser was when a reporter asked the Sheriff’s spokesperson if the department could match eggs found in a refrigerator with those thrown at the house.
