‘In a Very Dark Time, You Lifted Me Up’: Kyle Kraska Returns

By Mark Joyella

Kyle Kraska returned to his regular spot on the air in San Diego Wednesday evening–which was a tremendous achievement before he said a word. Kraska was shot and nearly killed two months ago, but returned to work doing sports at KFMB, but only after taking a few moments on air to thank the people who helped pull him through. “In a very dark time, you lifted me up,” Kraska said to the countless folks who sent cards, letters, and emails while he was hospitalized. “They inspired me to pull myself out of a hospital bed, (and) to learn to walk again.”

Kraska shared photos from his recovery–and singled out his surgeon, nursing team, and a friend–also a cop–who was the first to respond when Kraska was shot outside his home. He credited the friend with motivating him in the moments after the shooting. “If it wasn’t for you, Scott, I never would’ve made it to the hospital. I would’ve died in the street,” he said.
