Imposter Twitter Account @TheFakeKOAA Pokes Fun At Colorado Springs Station

By Merrill Knox

KOAA, the NBC affiliate in Colorado Springs, has a Twitter imposter.

@TheFakeKOAA, which was started yesterday morning, is not masquerading as anything other than a joke. “We are not affiliated with Channel 5, KOAA-TV, in any capacity. KEYWORD: FAKE,” reads the account description.

But the account still pokes fun at the news business — across all platforms, not just KOAA — with a snarky tone. “Do you use deodorant? You’ll be dead in a year. That story after the break,” one Tweet reads. “JUST IN: Nike shoe found near base of Barr trail @manitouincline. HELP US #ReturnTheShoe,” reads another.

The people behind the account — which has only 88 followers so far — talked to the Colorado Springs independent yesterday and reiterated that the account is intended only as a joke. “The only harm we’ll cause is attempting to be funny,” they said.
