Local stations are, again, planning big coverage as the Pope’s U.S. Tour is moving on to Philadelphia.
TVSpy isn’t sure how much NBC-owned WCAU will be affected by the walkout of its union photographers and camera operators, but the station is saying the show will go on.
WTXF
Fox-owned stations plan on going live at all of the Pope’s events. The station plans to give extra time to the Holy Father during newscasts. WTXF also plans to use social media to keep viewers updated on his movements with the twitter hashtag #PopeinPhilly.
WTXF is airing a half-hour special tonight at 10:30 p.m. to preview the Pope’s arrival tomorrow.
WCAU
NBC10 Philadelphia / WCAU and Telemundo62 Philadelphia / WWSI – whose news teams were the first to travel to Argentina this summer – to learn first-hand about Pope Francis’ upbringing and background, will provide viewers with extensive news reports and coverage for English- and Spanish-viewers, unlike any other stations in the market. Beginning at 6 AM on Saturday, September 26, NBC10 will be reporting live as the Pope arrives in Philadelphia and makes his way around the City. Telemundo62 will provide Spanish-language viewers with widespread coverage of the Pope’s visit throughout the entire weekend on air, online and through its social channels. NBC10 and Telemundo62’s news teams will be covering stories like no one in the market place for viewers to watch on-air, online, on-the-go, on COZI-TV and on their social media channels. The interviews both news teams conducted while in Buenos Aires resulted in the production of a special 30-minute program, The People’s Pope (El Papa del Pueblo, in Spanish-language), which aired on NBC10 and Telemundo62 in August and rebroadcast in September, and was also made available to all NBC and Telemundo-owned stations.
WPVI
The Morning Call reports WPVI will “air Urban Trinity: The Story of Catholic Philadelphia at 6 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22” and will provide “…live coverage of the papal visit from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 to 11 p.m. Sept 26; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27”

Philadelphia, September 22, 2015 – CBS 3 and The CW Philly are poised to bring Delaware Valley viewers the region’s most extensive coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families this weekend live from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. In addition to 36 hours of Papal coverage on CBS 3 and The CW Philly, CBSPhilly.com will be live streaming the event both in English and in Spanish.
Reporter Todd Quinones will be on location in Washington, D.C. beginning today as Pope Francis visits the nation’s capital. David Spunt will be reporting from New York City for Eyewitness News when the Pope arrives there later this week. CBS 3 will preview the Philadelphia leg of the Pope’s tour with The Pope in Philadelphia, a half-hour overview hosted by Ukee Washington and Jessica Dean with special reports by Pat Ciarrocchi, Thursday, September 24th at 7 p.m.
Anchors Erika von Tiehl and Nicole Brewer kick off Saturday morning’s coverage September 26th at 5-7 a.m. Pat Ciarrocchi and Jim Donovan will anchor live coverage beginning at 9 a.m. through the Pope’s afternoon activities with Ukee Washington and Jessica Dean taking the anchor duties from approximately 3 p.m. to midnight. Coverage will also include special analysts and guests in studio and on location including Bishop David O’Connell of the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey; Sister Mary Scullion of Project HOME; Reverend Carl Janicki of Cabrini College, and Dr. William Madges, theology professor at St. Joseph’s University.
Coverage continues at 6 a.m. to 12 noon on CBS 3 Sunday, September 27th. The CW Philly will recap Saturday’s events from 12 noon until 3 p.m. for those who may have missed them and then resume live coverage from 3- 8 p.m. Both the 10 p.m. news of The CW and CBS 3’s 11 p.m. newscast will be expanded to an hour on Sunday night for Papal coverage.
