Hawaii’s First TV Anchor Returns to KGMB

By Andrew Gauthier

Wayne Collins, then a news director for a local radio station, became Hawaii’s first TV anchor when he appeared on KGMB‘s debut newscast in 1953. The Honolulu CBS-affiliate began running a 15-minute daily newscast and Collins was responsible for nearly everything–so much so that he never worked off of a written script, preferring instead to report the news from memory.

Collins, who left broadcasting in 1966 and moved away from Hawaii in 1972, returned to the old KGMB studio recently and Hawaii News Now was there for the tour (video above).
