Grand Rapids Meteorologist Going to Work for The Salvation Army

By Kevin Eck

Jon Shaner, morning meteorologist for Grand Rapids FOX affiliate WXMI is joining the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center as its new marketing director.

Shaner started at WXMI in August 2006. Before that he worked at WSBT in South Bend, Indiana and at WOTV in Battle Creek, Mich.

“Jon’s role as a husband and father come first, and we support his decision to take a job that offers a more predictable schedule for his family,” said news director Brooks Blanton. “Although he’ll be working outside the TV news business, Jon has offered to come back often and make guest appearances on our shows.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve built at FOX 17. I’ve had more fun than anybody should at work,” said Shaner. “However, my schedule has put stress on me and my growing family. This was the best long-term decision for us.”

Shaner’s last day is tomorrow.
