Fox to Launch Streaming Plan For Affiliates

By Merrill Knox

Fox Television is planning to launch a streaming plan for its affiliates that will allow users to stream network and local content online, according to TVNewsCheck. Plans were unveiled Tuesday afternoon for an expected fall launch:

Similar to Disney’s Watch ESPN app and ABC’s current streaming strategy, paid TV subscribers would be able to access local and network content through a variety of apps and on the web. Once authenticated, users could watch a live, linear stream or individual video-on-demand programming.

Additionally, Fox plans to release a new Fox Sports Go app that would let users watch local sports based on their market. For example, users in Michigan would be able to watch live Detroit Pistons games from Fox Sports Detroit.

“We want to make sure our content is on every device, either through the Fox national app, on the Fox Sports Go app, or something similar with our entertainment content,” says Michael Hopkins, Fox Networks president of distribution.”If consumers are going to go to a local station site or app, we want our content to be there.”

The plan also allows for additional, local advertising opportunities for the affiliates.

News of a streaming plan comes just a day after News Corp. COO Chase Carey raised the possibility of converting Fox Television into a cable channel in response to streaming TV service Aereo.
