Former KFOR Chief Photographer Dies

KFOR reports Darrell Barton, former chief photographer for the Oklahoma City NBC affiliate, has died after a brief illness.

According to his profile on the Heartland NATAS Chapter website, Barton was a combat marine in Vietnam. He was hired by KFOR, when it was known as KTVY, in 1969 and worked there until 1983.

Barton went on to work for three of the major network’s news shows, as well as working on ABC’s 20/20 and CBS’ 48 Hours. He was named NPPA Photographer of the Year twice, once in 1974 and again in 1981.

Barton also taught hundreds of journalists while serving as a faculty member at NPPA’s News Video Workshop at the Gaylord College of Journalism & Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma.

Following many assignments and awards, Barton moved to a log cabin in Edmond with his wife, Marilyn.

He was 73.
