Former Houston Sports Director Dies

Former KTRK sports director Bob Allen has died. He was 70.

Allen started at KTRK in 1974 as the weekend sports anchor and left the Houston ABC-owned station as sports director in 2013 to work at CBS affiliate KHOU.

“Bob lived a great life. He really did,” said George Jensen, former KHOU photojournalist. “He lived a life that every sports fan would want to live.”

“We were in Kissimmee at Astros spring training,” said KHOU photojournalist Bob Luna. “It was my first spring training with Bob, and he was talking to a younger player. The guy was – you could tell he was a little timid answering all the questions. And then just out of nowhere, Bob didn’t skip a beat, he asked ‘Did you ever think you’d be interviewed by Bob Allen?’”

“I know a number of times he went up to new coaches that maybe he wasn’t getting along with very well, and he would say, ‘I was here long before you got here, and I’ll be here long after you’re gone,” said Jensen.

Bob called himself a father, a grandfather, a broadcaster, a believer, a speaker and author. Yes, he was all of that, but he was also our voice.

Bob Allen will always stand for Houston.
