First EP of Good Day Atlanta Dies

By Kevin Eck

Former WAGA executive producer Sidmel Estes died Tuesday after what family members said was a lengthy illness. She was 60.

Estes had worked at the Fox-owned Atlanta station since 1980. She started as an assignment editor and worked her way up from associate producer, to producer, to become the first executive producer of Good Day Atlanta, which launched in 1992. She left the station in 2006.

She was the first female president of the National Association of Black Journalists. After leaving WAGA, she taught at Clark University as an adjunct professor.
