Final Piece of KWTV’s Historic Broadcast Tower Falls

By Aneya Fernando

Back in July, we reported that KWTV‘s historic broadcast tower would soon be taken down.

The Oklahoma CBS affiliate’s tower was a truly impressive structure for its time. It was built in 1954 and reached the widest coverage of any station in the Southwest. It stood at more than 1,572 feet tall (making it around 300 feet higher than the Empire State Building). At one point, it was the world’s tallest man-made structure.

But, the TV business changed and the tower soon became obsolete.

Since July, it has been taken down piece by piece–parts had to be blow-torched and plenty of wires were cut. Before an audience, the tall tower tumbled.

On Monday, the final part of the tower was taken down. It will be taken apart even further and the scrap metal will eventually be recycled.
