The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences presented its 32nd annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards last night, and while most of the awards categories were for national news (read about those winners over at TVNewser), Chicago’s WMAQ and Denver’s KMGH were both honored with Emmys in regional categories.
WMAQ’s 10 p.m. newscast won the Outstanding Regional News Story in the Spot News category for their coverage of the Burr Oak Cemetery scandal. WMAQ, which is an NBC owned-and-operated station, beat out Nashville’s WSMV, the only other nominee in spot news.
Denver ABC-affiliate KMGH won the Emmy for Outstanding Regional News Story in the Investigative Reporting category for Tony Kovaleski’s report called “33 Minutes to 34 Right.” Other nominees in the investigative reporting category were KHOU in Houston, KUSA in Denver, WTHR in Indianapolis and WVUE in New Orleans.
