The dust has finally settled at the Times Square studio of “Good Morning America.” On Thursday morning’s broadcast, “GMA” news anchor Chris Cuomo announced that he would be leaving the morning show after three years to become co-anchor of the primetime newsmagazine “20/20.”
The announcement ends months of speculation surrounding ABC’s search for a replacement for Diane Sawyer, who is leaving “GMA” after this week to become the anchor of “World News.” The race ultimately came down to two ABC veterans: Cuomo and “This Week” anchor George Stephanopoulos. According to reports, Stephanopoulos has accepted ABC’s “GMA” offer and will be introduced as the show’s new anchor very soon.
At the beginning of Tuesday’s “GMA,” Cuomo officially announced the move. He called the “20/20” appointment, where he will share the anchor desk with Elizabeth Vargas, “a dream job.” “I am leaving a special place and crew and all of you and you are all part of my family,” he said, reflecting on his time with the show.
