Bianca Slota Anchors WCAX Newscasts After Accepting Government Position

By Andrew Gauthier

Earlier this month WCAX reporter Bianca Slota accepted a position with Vermont Governor-elect Peter Shumlin so some viewers in Burlington have been surprised to see her anchoring the station’s Sunday night newscast.

Slota, who joined Burlington’s CBS-affiliate in 2007, is set to become Shumlin’s press secretary once he takes office.  Her final day with WCAX is Thursday but Terri Hallenbeck of the Burlington Free Press wonders why she was ever allowed at the anchor desk…

As an anchor she was in a position to deliver news of all kinds, including government and political news. At the same time,  she is getting ready to take a job that involves controlling government and political news, which is sort of the opposite of delivering the news.

WCAX news director Anson Tebbetts has said that the move was a way to keep Slota away from political reporting. What do you think? Should WCAX have kept Slota off the air completely? Or did they act appropriately? Sound off in the comments section below…
