Cheryl Scott and Alicia Roman Join Chicago’s WMAQ

NBC owned-and-operated WMAQ in Chicago has added two meteorologists to the weather team: Cheryl Scott (pictured, right) and Alicia Roman.

Scott, who is currently a meteorologist at WBIR in Knoxville, will be WMAQ’s weekend meteorologist. She will replace Ginger Zee, who is leaving the station in October, reportedly to join ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Roman will join the station as the meteorologist for the newly-launched noon newscast. She comes to WMAQ from WISH in Indianapolis.

With the addition of Scott and Roman, WMAQ’s weather team will expand to five people, including current meteorologists Brant Miller, Andy Avalos and Pete Sack. “We are committed to providing our viewers across all platforms the most comprehensive weather coverage in Chicago,” station president and general manager Larry Wert said in a statement.

NBC 5 CHICAGO EXPANDS WEATHER TEAM

(September 12, 2011) – NBC 5 Chicago announced today two new additions to the NBC 5 Weather Team.  Cheryl Scott will be joining the team as the weekend meteorologist and Alicia Roman will be the primary meteorologist for the newly launched NBC5 News at Noon.  They will be joining the NBC 5 weather team of Brant Miller, Andy Avalos and Pete Sack which will now increase to five members.  As previously reported, current weekend meteorologist Ginger Zee will be leaving the station in October.

“We are committed to providing our viewers across all platforms the most comprehensive weather coverage in Chicago,” said Larry Wert, President Central and Western Region, NBC Owned Television Stations and President and General Manager of NBC 5.

“The additions of Cheryl and Alicia will allow us to expand our coverage during breaking weather situations and focus even more on preparing and informing our viewers,” said Frank Whittaker, NBC 5’s Station Manager and Vice President of News.

Cheryl Scott is joining NBC 5 from WBIR, the NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee.  For the past two years, she has been the weekend morning and evening meteorologist.  Prior to her work in Knoxville, Cheryl worked as a weather forecaster in Erie, Pennsylvania.  She is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, and holds her broadcast meteorology certification from Mississippi State University.

Alicia Roman is joining NBC 5 from WISH, the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, where she handled weekend and weekday forecasts.  Prior to Indianapolis, she worked as a weather forecaster in Columbia, South Carolina.  Alicia holds a journalism degree from Penn State University, and also attended the broadcast meteorology program at Mississippi State University.  She has her AMS Seal of Approval.
