Changes in Denver AM Market

Two morning news shows in Denver are going through transitions at the moment.

ABC affiliate KMGH recently debuted a new set, which Joanne Ostrow over at The Denver Post, didn’t much like:

The big, empty 7News set, a display of video technology on multiple screens, looks big and empty. When I walked around it in person, I hoped it would play better on camera. It doesn’t, and the anchors appear awkward moving from one spot to another. Does standing without an anchor chair add anything? It’s a distraction.

Meanwhile, NBC affiliate KUSA‘s team has been changing in recent months after the departure of longtime fan favorite Kyle Dyer. Ostrow explains what the rest of the team looks like today:

Work-horse Gary Shapiro attempts to hold things together with trooper Cheryl Preheim, while former cheerleader and dancer Corey Rose and well-traveled TV vet Marty Coniglio take turns…When you build a newsroom around big personalities rather than, say, content, it hurts when a popular anchor leaves.

The ratings for September 2014, however, show that KUSA remains at #1, despite the shuffling of anchors. The station’s ratings have decreased compared to previous years, particularly among younger viewers, while KMGH has made significant gains.

For viewers age 25-54, from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m., KUSA scored a 1.4 rating and 15.7 share. KMGH came in second with a 0.8 rating and 9 share. FOX affiliate KDVR came in third with a 0.5 rating, 6 share.
