Change, Not Decline, in Audiences’ News Consumption

As reports continue to come in about the decline of newspapers and broadcast TV news, it appears that change may be the more accurate term. According to a new survey from The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, Americans now are actually consuming as much news as they were in the mid-1990s. While overall audiences may be declining in traditional news mediums, the desire for news has not dissipated.

“Digital platforms are playing a larger role in news consumption,” the survey notes,” and they seem to be more than making up for modest declines in the audience for traditional platforms.”

Perhaps the most significant finding of the new survey is that Americans are increasingly compartmentalizing the way that they get the news. No doubt driven by the multi-tasking, multi-tab flow of the internet, audiences are turning to a variety of news outlets based on the type of information they seek. For instance a majority of regular CNN viewers (64%) say they rely on the network for breaking news and headlines, while a sizable chunk of MSNBC viewers (15%) say they turn to the network for views and opinions.
