Boston Anchor Not Renewing Her Contract

By Kevin Eck

WCVB anchor J.C. Monahan is leaving the Boston Hearst ABC affiliate after her contract runs out later this year.

The Boston Globe reports Monahan will be replaced by Emily Riemer as co-anchor of the station’s 5 p.m. newscast alongside Ben Simmoneau.

“I want to let you know of a big decision I have made,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I have decided not renew my contract with WCVB. Below is a copy of the letter I sent to everyone at the station, if you’d like to read it. Thank you SO much for all your support. I couldn’t have done ANY of it without you!! I’m so grateful.”

New England One reports there’s speculation Monahan is moving to NBC Boston.

She started working at WCVB as a meteorologist in 2001 and started anchoring the station’s Chronicle show in 2013.

Here’s the text of what she wrote to staffers at WCVB:

After deep consideration, I have determined it is time for me to embark on a new adventure. It was not an easy decision to leave WCVB, but personal growth comes when you step outside your comfort zone, and I am ready to chart a new course.
I will never forget the day I received a phone call from WCVB-TV News Director Coleen Marren, asking to meet. The idea I could be working for the TV station I grew up watching was beyond exciting. Little did I know, I was embarking on an incredible 15 year journey.
I am deeply grateful to have worked for a company that has allowed me to grow and expand my career. I have had the rare opportunity to develop from meteorologist to anchor of Chronicle to evening news anchor. Each step I took was a privilege and I worked hard to keep the trust granted to me by WCVB and the viewers. They too, allowed me to develop over the years. That cumulative support has been uplifting.
Thank you, WCVB family, for the kindness you have shown me. I look forward to watching your work and cheering you on. I leave with nothing but gratitude in my heart. It has been a wonderful ride.
My best to you all, both personally and professionally. May you continue to find joy in all that you do.
Sincerely,
JC
