Bob the Weather Cat Remembered in Portland

By Kevin Eck

There was a time in Portland, Oregon when the dominant local TV weather personality was a cat who stoically wore sunglasses, hats and even a guitar during the station’s weather segment.

For seven years, Bob the Weather Cat appeared on ABC affiliate KATU and got so famous, he drew the attention of People Magazine.

“Every Friday night, thousands of VCRs in the Portland, Ore., area are programmed to record station KATU from 6:50 to 6:52 p.m.,” wrote People in 1988.

The Oregonian reports Bob, who died in 1993, was discovered by station cameraman Bob Foster.

The video cut of Bob’s on-air appearances (below) show he didn’t do much forecasting. But like any cat in the spotlight, viewers loved him.
