WVTM news director Tim Gardner has resigned from the Birmingham, Ala. NBC affiliate.

Hank Price, WVTM’s gm, told al.com Gardner announced the move to staff yesterday morning, saying he was leaving to be with his wife and family in Dallas.

“As far as I’m concerned, he is an absolute professional, and I appreciate all of he has done for us. He has given us notice, and he will be leaving in July,” Price said. “We will, of course, begin the search for a news director.”

A native of Fayette and a 1977 graduate of the University of Alabama, Gardner came to NBC 13 as news director in March 2007. He also previously worked at the station as a producer from 1979 to 1982. In between, he worked at stations in Austin and San Antonio, Texas.

Gardner’s announced departure comes just four days after longtime NBC 13 news anchor Mike Royer signed off after 25 years at the station.

Also, in May, weekend meteorologist Richard Jacks left the station after 18 year to pursue a career in real-estate.
