Ben Sherwood has been named the new President of ABC News. The news, first reported by TVNewser, was formally announced by Disney/ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney on Friday morning.

“Ben combines an intimate knowledge and success in the news business with a creative flair and entrepreneurial spirit that are second-to-none,” Sweeney said. “While at ABC News, he delivered GMA’s two most successful seasons in history, and guided prize-winning coverage of some of the biggest stories of the day.”

Sherwood was the executive producer of “Good Morning America” until June of 2006. After leaving “GMA,” Sherwood published the non-fiction book “The Survivors Club,” which went on to become a New York Times Bestseller. He is an accomplished author and during his time away from ABC he saw his book “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud” made into a feature movie starring Disney starlet Zac Efron.

According to TVNewser, former ABC News president David Westin is set to write a book about his time with ABC, eventually providing some insight into what Sherwood is up against as he takes the reins.
