At 82, Porterfield Still a Fixture on Chicago TV

One year ago, WLS-Channel 7 opted not to renew Harry Porterfield‘s contract, and WBBM-Channel 2 almost immediately decided to rehire him, after 24 years, to co-anchor the midday news report. Porterfield was with WBBM from the mid-’60s to 1985, when he jumped to Channel 7 after he was demoted to reporter from news anchor to make room for the return of Bill Kurtis from a CBS network morning show.

The 82-year-old Porterfield is, without question, a low-key but genuine fixture on the Chicago broadcast scene. Perhaps that’s in part why WBBM’s midday news ratings have held steady or improved a bit since Porterfield and his co-anchor, Roseanne Tellez, joined forces to front the station’s midday news. More…
