After 26 Years, Shan Whiston Bids Farewell to WGEM

By Andrew Gauthier

Shan Whiston is bidding farewell to WGEM after nearly 26 years with the station.

“When people speak of WGEM and its leadership status in news and community service, the name Shan Whiston often enters the conversation,” said WGEM news director Chad Mahoney in announcing Whiston’s departure. “Shan will leave WGEM News having touched many lives.”

Whiston joined WGEM, an NBC-affiliate serving the Tri-Cities area along the borders Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa, in 1985 as a reporter and since then has become a familiar face in the community. She currently anchors WGEM’s 6 p.m. newscast.

Whiston is leaving WGEM to spend more time with her family as they move to be closer to where her husband has accepted a new job.

“I’m not just leaving the WGEM family, where I’ve worked with such a marvelous crew, so very many bright and creative people,” Whiston said. “I’m also leaving the community I’ve called home, where our children were born, started school and developed priceless friendships.”

The station has set up a special page on its website to honor Whiston, asking viewers to submit their own farewell messages.
