Zakaria on Viewers From Washington to Kabul

By SteveK

The New York Observer’s Felix Gillette interviews Fareed Zakaria about his recent big “get” of Hamid Karzai and the global reach of his weekend CNN show, GPS.

“If Karzai wants to give an interview that’s going to be watched in Washington and in Kabul simultaneously, there aren’t that many forums that can do that,” Zakaria said. “And I’m willing to give him the space to explain his views and to elaborate on them.”

The interview aired on February 15.

Zakaria talked about the lack of appeal for international news on American TV. “I think American audiences have a certain fatigue of the sameness of coverage: a kind of unending incremental coverage of the rest of the world, where they don’t understand why this is important,” he said.
