Woodruff Returns to China For ABC Special

ABC’s Bob Woodruff, whose career as a journalist began in China, returns to the country for tonight’s ABC Primetime special, “China Inside Out”.

TV Guide’s Stephen Battaglio talks with Woodruff about the special. “Woodruff was a lawyer when he first went to China in the mid 1980s,” writes Battaglio. “He was hired by CBS News to be an interpreter during the uprising in Tiananmen Square, an event that launched his journalism career.”

Woodruff describes what’s changed in the past 20 years. “When I was there most of my Chinese friends never even thought they’d leave China,” he says. “Ambassadors were the only ones I knew that were outside of the country. Now there are Chinese all over the world, not just in the United States.”

The ABC Newsman also gives Battaglio a medical update. Woodruff, who survived a 2006 IED attack in Iraq, says he still has “moments where I can’t remember names of friends and some words.”
