Woman Sues ABC News Over Abuse Video

By Chris Ariens

The AP reports a New York woman has filed a lawsuit against ABC News “claiming negligence and recklessness” in a ‘Primetime’ segment.

The lawsuit involves video footage from an April 21, 2006 story called “Stepfamilies in Crisis.” It showed then-15-year-old Kyle Nelson being abused by her stepfather.

“We maintain that a situation of continual, ongoing child abuse could have been stopped by ABC,” Nelson’s attorney Matthew Norfolk says. Nelson, who is now 20, moved out of her stepfather’s home before the segment aired.

The suit seeks “punitive damages in an amount to be determined by a jury; a permanent injunction against ABC showing the film of Nelson’s abuse again; and a judgment compelling ABC to fulfill its promises to provide Nelson with counseling.”

ABC News spokeswoman Paige Capossela tells the AP, the network hadn’t been served with any lawsuit as of Wednesday evening, and had no comment.
