By Chris Ariens

HLN was the most-watched network in total day and in primetime Friday among younger viewers as it continued extensive coverage of the George Zimmerman trial in Sanford, FL.

As we’ve been covering, the trial has helped boost other news networks that have provided near gavel-to-gavel coverage. For the day HLN averaged 262,000 demo viewers, up +79% vs. their quarter-to-date average. In total viewers, the network averaged 673,000 viewers, second to Fox News’ 1.235 million, and up +62% quarter-to-date. The network’s most watched hour came in the early afternoon at 1pmET when a neighbor who heard the gunshot that killed Trayvon Martin, testified.

HLN also won primetime (8-11pm) in the demo averaging 273,000 viewers. Each of those hours at 8, 9 and 10pm beat the news channel competition on FNC, CNN, and MSNBC in the demo. It was the only channel to grow vs. quarter-to-date in primetime up +45% in the demo and up +19% in total viewers. FNC was down -41% / -27%, CNN was down -36% / -31%, and MSNBC was down -19% / -29%.
