It’s Official: NBC Announces Return of ‘Where In the World is Matt Lauer?’

By Alex Weprin

This morning NBC’s “Today” confirmed that it would be bringing back its popular “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” programming stunt  for November sweeps. As TVNewser first reported in August, the 2011 “Where in the World?” will be marketed as a “10th anniversary” trip. While the segment began 13 years ago in 1998, there have only been nine installments so far, the last one being in 2008.

Lauer announced the return this morning by pranking viewers, suggesting that he would be leaving the morning program:

“As you all know I have been with the Today show for more than 14 years and I cannot tell you the joy that that time has brought me sitting besides the likes of Katie, Meredith and Anne. So I have decided it is time to say goodbye, so this November I am leaving… on my special 10th edition of ‘Where in the World is Matt Lauer?'”

Today.com will have exclusive content tied to the segment’s return, including an archive of Lauer’s past trips, games and a contest.

“Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” will return November 7th.
