What the “R” Word Means for “CES”

By Chris Ariens

TVNewser is headed west to cover the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

This is the place where the VCR was introduced in 1970, the CD player in 1981 and the DVD player in 1996.

More than 120,000 designers, developers, executives, engineers, buyers and sellers will descend on Las Vegas this week to see what’s new in the $100 billion consumer electronics industry. And we’ll be there to cover it all… well, as much of the 1.7 million square feet we can get to.

How is the recession affecting the industry? Are companies scaling back? Will we have to wait until 2010 to see the really new, new thing?

We’ll find out as we cover tonight’s keynote from Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer and tomorrow’s keynotes from Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer and Disney-ABC president Anne Sweeney. NBCU is once again the broadcast partner and CBS Corp.’s CNET will be all over the show.

Look for reports here on TVNewser as well as on our new blog WebNewser. Meanwhile, SteveK will be back at HQ manning the TVNewser fort.
