‘We All Hit the Floor’: NBC News Producer Witnessed Ferguson Shooting

By Mark Joyella

NBC News producer Jennifer Roller was working protests at the Ferguson, Missouri police department Wednesday night, and thought things had finally begun to wind down after midnight when someone started firing gunshots. “It sounded like firecrackers, that’s what we thought at first, but when everybody hit the floor and the police said, ‘get down, get down,’ and guns were drawn, we all hit the floor,” Roller told “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie. “It was a frightening moment.”

Two police officers were shot and seriously injured in the incident. Roller said officers shouted to news crews to run for cover. “We were on our knees next to the police officers. And there were no more shots fired but it was a very, very tense few moments.”
