Vanity Fair on Piers Morgan: ‘Who is he, why is he here, is he returnable?’

By Alex Weprin

Vanity Fair‘s James Wolcott writes about CNN’s Piers Morgan in the latest issue of the magazine, and he is not particularly flattering:

Many questions torment America in its dark night of the soul, questions more urgently pressing, and yet it must be asked: How did we get stuck with Piers Morgan? Who is he, why is he here, is he returnable?

And:

Who is to say he won’t succeed? I, for one, have learned never to bet against naked unadulterated shameless relentless ambitious careerism that can eat through steel wool (so many examples come to mind!).

Morgan responded to Wolcott’s critique on Twitter, saying:

“My response to James Wolcott @vanityfair : No, I’m not. So maybe remove head from bitchy, pompous, humourless a**?”

Despite the vivid writing in his piece, Wolcott’s criticism’s of Morgan are essentially the same ones that  have made many times before. Morgan and his team are well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the show and the format, and it is safe to say they will take action to try and prevent the show from getting stale.

If that means going live, they will go live, and if it means getting creative with booking, they will get creative.

Television is an ever-evolving medium, and Morgan’s show–like all other cable news shows–will adapt and change as needed.
