Doug Logan spoke his mind to board members, athletes, and the media. In the end, that trait was his end.
United States Track & Field fired its CEO after he’d been on the job for just 26 months. He joined the organization before the Beijing Olympics and set a goal for the Americans to win 30 medals during the London Olympics. (They won 23 during the 2006 Summer Games.)
There’s also speculation that Logan didn’t generate enough revenue for the program, although he says the budget increased from $15 million to $20 million and told The New York Times, “I disagree that I didn’t generate the revenues. In the eyes of some, it wasn’t enough. Others are entitled to their opinions.”
So, lessons: When in charge of a US Olympic program, keep your head down, your mouth shut, and the coffers full.
