CBS News announced today that a new series of reports, “Congressional Voices,” will air on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC (6:30 PM, ET). Similar to the “American Voices” series, where she sat down for small, roundtable discussions with different groups of voters during the 2010 midterm elections, Couric will interview the newly elected American lawmakers and political leaders who will help shape Washington’s political narrative in the coming year. By talking to members of both political parties in intimate groups and revisiting freshman members of the 112th Congress throughout the year, CBS News will provide an in-depth look at these newly minted leaders challenged with making the tough political, social and economic choices facing this country.
The series will launch on Wednesday, Jan. 5 with Couric’s conversation with three freshman lawmakers: Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the state of Alabama; Rep. Robert Dold (R-IL), a small business owner who replaces Republican incumbent Mark Kirk in the 10th Congressional district of Illinois; and Rep. Allen West (R-FL), a Tea Party-backed candidate, and the first black Republican from Florida to be elected to Congress since 1876. Her extended discussion with these freshmen Congress members can be seen in the next episode of @katiecouric, Couric’s weekly webshow, and will be available online after 6:30 PM, ET on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at www.cbsnews.com/katiecouricwebshow.
