This passage in yesterday’s MarketWatch story about Jon Klein stands out:
“When I asked him why, then, CNN continued to trail Fox, even with the many positive changes he has instituted, Klein looked momentarily flummoxed. ‘I don’t know,’ he said, ‘but we’re going to change that.'”
He doesn’t know why FNC is still #1? But he’s going to change that? How can he change it if he doesn’t know the cause?
But he’s not the first exec to make bold statements about the cable news wars. Back in 2001, then-TBS CEO Jamie Kellner made this prediction: “Give us six months to a year and see what happens. We will be well ahead of Fox.”
“I don’t know” apparently applied to Kellner, too…
